Review by John Broggio - February 13, 2007

I don't want to add anything on the performance aspect of Alex Leach's site review but I must add a footnote about his judgement of the sound on this fabulous disc.

Volodos' stupendous playing is marvellously reflected throughout, both in the studio (the "encores") and from the Philharmonie. Now, the Philharmonie is far from being the worst hall I've ever sat in but it has acoustic quirks that can sound strange when presented in an accurate MCH recording. This is arguably the finest concert recording of the BPO that I have heard to date (from a sonic perspective) and there is no way I consider myself in the front row, more like towards the back of the first (of many) tier(s). In particular, the strings have their customary velvety depth, brass their burnished brightness and the woodwind positively trip off the ear; the relationship with the piano is also very well judged. The studio recording is also very fine indeed.

Those who don't like applause would have a very stony heart not to want to join in the ovation that greets the end of the concerto...
