Review by Mark Novak - November 18, 2004
I have to disagree with the previous reviews. The sound of this recording has a consistent veil over it (I listen to 2 CH SACD). Strings, brass, winds all sound reigned in on the top. It is expecially irritating when the violins are playing above the stave where I don't hear the natural harmonic bloom one would expect but rather a pinched nasal quality that is unpleasant. A major sonic disappointment especially considering the source and the native DSD recording.
As to the performance, I listened all the way through not realizing this was taken from live performances until the applause at the end. I did detect some vocalizing (Ozawa?) during some of the softer, melodic phrases but I must say the audience was very quiet. I think this is no better than an average performance of this work. I certainly prefer Barenboim on Teldec and Solti on Decca although this is on par with Haitink on Philips (all red book CD's). So, not bad but not great. I say save your money for better SACD's (I wish I had).
