Review by John Broggio - December 2, 2006
This is not my normal choice for review but the playing is so good as to merit a mention.
These accounts of the overtures are almost uniformly spirited and turned out with appropriate verve - only in "Beherrscher der Geister" does one feel that Gustav Kuhn fails to give as much drive as one might wish. The Dresden Staatskapelle play like gods and for this reason alone, the disc should be a compulsory purchase for those who care about orchestral playing - especially as there are only two genuine MCH discs featuring this marvellous institution.
The recording has been (I strongly suspect) been manipulated from a (good) but closely miked stereo PCM master into a 5.1 mix by Capriccio technicians & some computers. Whilst this has been tastefully done, there may be some purists who will object to this approach. There are moments when the sound becomes quite fierce, as many will have ruefully heard from many sources in the early 1980's (especially when the brass really take off).
Apart from very brief notes, the only other grumble I hold about this disc is the lack of the "Invitation to the Dance", for which there is easily enough room.
Overall a good recommendation with customary reservations for recordings that have undergone this sort of manipulation.
