Review by John Broggio - October 6, 2008

A fair recording that is wonderful in terms of spiritual atmosphere and recording but lacking a convincing sense of rhythmical accuracy.

Momo Kodama is something of a frustrating artist, she can be excellent Impressions - Kodama but equally she can be roughshod in her ideas Chopin: Piano Sonata No. 3 - Kodama. Here, she verges on the excellence and one frequently falls under the hypnotic spell of the wonderful music in her hands. There are frequent occasions though, most easily noticeable in the opening movement, where there is a subtle but marked instability in her sense of rhythm. In concert, this would almost certainly be forgiven if noticed at all but becomes rather uncomfortable to hear on a repeated basis. It is this alone that prevents her account from joining the exalted ranks of Yvonne Loriod or Pierre-Laurent Aimard to name but two wonderful accounts of this C20 masterpiece for piano.

Unlike in the Debussy release, the recording sounds pretty good - not exceptional but little to mark it down either.

In summation, this is a place-holder for SACD but a good one at that.
