Enescu: Suite No. 2, Suite No. 3 'Pièces Impromptues', Regrets

Sina Kloke (piano)

Phenomenal Virtuosity
George Enescu hardly admits of easy stylistic labeling – which is what makes his piano music so special and interesting. As might be expected, we repeatedly hear reminiscences of his native Rumania. However, since he studied under Massenet and Fauré and counted Ravel and Koechlin among his fellow pupils, it is not surprising that French influence is also very audible. Sina Kloke has selected the Pièces Impromptues and the Suite No. 2 for her challenging debut program. The young pianist introduces herself with a fine feel for the music’s special colors and phenomenal virtuosity.

Superior Technique
Although Enescu’s instrument was the violin, he had a remarkable command of piano composition and stages a fireworks show of tone colors on the keyboard. At the same time, he challenges the pianist with full chords, intricately detailed polyphony, and complex rhythms requiring superior piano technique and a special feel for the tonal qualities of the folkloric elements.

Pianistic Variety
The “Carillon nocturne” contains Gregorian melodies harmonized with mixture tones and distant bells recalling Ravel’s “La vallée des cloches.” Frolicking performance joy marks the “Bourrée,” a title immediately advertising the neoclassical character of this piece, while luscious arpeggios accompany the “Mélodie” opening the Pièces Impromptues.

Superlative Technology
Regrets is this album’s absolute new discovery and forms its encore. There is nothing at all to regret here, but perhaps this concluding number played directly from the manuscript very much reflects Enescu’s proverbial modesty, a personal trait occurring in complete opposition to the tonal opulence of his works. Here the “Manfred Bürki” Steinway concert grand piano is in its element, and sound engineering at its finest displays Sina Kloke’s musicianship in all its radiant glory on what is a perfectly balanced Super Audio CD.
