Review by John Broggio - February 17, 2006

At last, a SACD release from what is one of my favourite ensembles! Fortunately this disc does not disappoint.

This recording hails from the Temple Church, London instead of the Tallis Scholars' favourite location (the Chapel of Merton College, Oxford) and gives a fascinating insight into the music of Palestrina's contemporary, Francisco Guerrero.

As with almost all of the Tallis' many discs and performances I have seen and heard, the overwhelming feeling is that of supreme peace despite the many emotions on display and vividly illustrated; this is due to the inspired direction of Peter Philips and the amazingly "pure" singing of the Tallis Scholars. For those who don't know their work in person, I can only strongly urge a visit to see them at the earliest opportunity.

Guerrero's music is comprehensively described in the, as always, superb notes from Peter Philips and I won't dwell on it much here other than to note that it is very well constructed and is a joy to listen to - a real balm to the senses.

As alluded to above, the performances are superb - I cannot imagine them being bettered musically or sonically. Even Pentatone or Channel Classics could learn a thing or two from the surround layer; it is sensational, it really does sound as though you are in the same building as the TS! Some listeners may find however, that the sibilants are quite noticeable - this is, from memory, characteristic of the TS both on disc and in concert but to those who are averse to such things, you have been warned...

Highly recommended.
