Review by John Broggio - February 9, 2006

This is a superbly well recorded but ultimately not quite a first choice album when compared to Karajan's renditions with the VPO.

The pieces here, are with the possible exception of Nordseebilder, so well known as to render any attempt at describing them worthless. Throughout, the Wiener Symphoniker play with great beauty and tonal lustre. The bitter-sweet happiness is always well caught and the balances both from a recording perspective and orchestrally are well nigh perfect. I have never heard this music so beautifully captured and this is quite possibly Pentatone's finest recording from a technical standpoint. For an example, try Tales from the Vienna Woods with its delightful zither solo.

The conducting is also fresh and light-touch; whilst there may be moments that Kreizburg lingers more than may be considered natural by some, for the most part the tempo changes are wholly convincing and he draws loving playing from Vienna's "other" orchestra.

Recommended.
