Ståle Kleiberg: Mass for Modern Man

Mari Eriksmoen, soprano
Johannes Weisser, baritone
Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and Choir
Eivind Gullberg Jensen, conductor

Ståle Kleiberg’s Mass for Modern Man is about the loss of existential meaning as an antithesis to faith and belief. The work commutes between these two extremes, and raises the following underlying question: Is belief possible for modern man? In this work, the answer is "yes"; not a resounding "yes", but a "yes" in spite of all.

The work is a large-scale concert mass for two soloists, choir and orchestra where Kleiberg's neo-romantic music commutes between the intimate and the grand.

I've always been a Ståle Kleiberg fan. This album is no exception. I am playing the multi-channel surround version. If you follow this composer, there are familiar melodies. Recording is excellent and makes good use of all channels. The soloists are quite good and the recording of their voices is excellent. The piece is meant to evoke emotions in the listener. Are you a believer? Does belief in God comfort you? The vocals increase the drama of the music and heighten self introspection.
