I finally got around to buying this set. I don't own any previous versions on CD or vinyl so I can't judge how good a job the engineers have done preparing this particular remastering. But judging this SACD without considering previous versions, one can't help but be slightly disappointed. I found the sound lacks detail and tends to break down in the fortissimo passages. I don't know whether the problem is with the way these sessions were originally recorded or whether it's the master tapes that are showing their age. Of course, this is performance any Wagnerite must own but I wonder whether, in this case, it was worth paying extra for the SACD version. (The latest CD version uses the same remastering as this SACD.)

Has anybody had a chance to compare the SACD with any previous releases?

Yep..I had!

And unfortunately you are right!

Among the 3 stupidiest things I've done ever, was to sell my "Grand Opera EMI Series" edition, in the silly hope that this one would necessarily be better.

IT
IS
NOT!

I onlyhad to compare the 'stormy' sections of the Steersman's Song, and the arrival of the Dutchman's Ship, to be not only pissed off, but left wondering WHY:

- Western companies did not fully use Compact Disc medium's capability (as already "denounced" by the Glorious March 1985(4?) High Fidelity magazine's review, of how the them new CD manufacturers were already "pushing with the belly (as we say here in Brazil)" the potential of the CD Media.

- Why the Japanese have Succumbed to the slovenly and lazy Western standards, on this SACD single layer edition.

The pressure level's of the 'Grand Opera Series' release were amazing, literally like in a live performance (LITERALLY!), the sweetness, the fluidity, the Aural picture..all!

Problem is, Adam sounds puny (sic)...but better the truest reality than the sweet illusion.

For me, it was like thinking that a new Woman is necessary better than a not-so-young one...
And I have paid the Price of my political Incorrectness...
Seek the GOS edition
(but only after I regain it, please!)

I DARE SAY...
That this GOS EMI-TOSHIBA Holländer is the best digitally remastered CD EVER...
