This collection of little known works is not the sort of recording that I would buy normally but as it contains a rare MacMillan work conducted by Ivan Fischer how could it be resisted ?
MacMillan's Trombone Concerto is an unusual work that came about after an informal conversation between the composer and this soloist (van Rijen) resulting in a subsequent commission by the RCO and 4 other orchestras. The result in my view seems technically deliberate rather than musically satisfying. Perhaps to meet the requirements of the commission the composer focused on producing a work that examines the trombone as an instrument to the full and challenging the technical proficiency of the soloist. It suffers in artistic expression consequently and one's listening tends to be pre-occupied by the soloist's gymnastics and technical competency rather than the music.
I did not enjoy the other works at all so prefer not to offer any further comments.
