Everywhere I read of this being an "award winning survey" by Marcus Bosch but my own experience is of totally under whelming performances and seriously limited recordings.

The 2nd is no exception and once again disappointment beckons. Bosch provides no fresh insights into this rarely played early work in which Dvoraks oeuvre had not been fully realised even 'though their are hints of what is to come later. It is only the dearth of Dvorak surveys on SACD especially encompassing his early works that might make one consider purchase.

The recording is muddy and congested and lacks transparency, depth and inner detail and is very reminiscent of old RBCD recordings. It hardly qualifies as high resolution audio and is likely to have been recorded at a low sample rate PCM. There is no mention of the recording regime used which is unhelpful and inexcusable these days.

In all honesty this SACD cannot be recommended.

Thanks for the tip, John. I checked. You are right: Even the MP3 sound clips are bad. I understand that these were live recordings basically meant for radio broadcast and one may wonder what the quality of the standard equipment in the Meistersinger Hall (Staatstheater Nürnberg) is like.

Please note, Marcus Bosch is on his way out in Nürnberg: "Ab der Saison 2018/19 übernimmt er künstlerische Verantwortung bei der Norddeutschen Philharmonie Rostock und wird dort Conductor in Residence".

Well john,
I don't require "fresh insights" in the performance of music that is over a century old. But I really don't want to spend money on recordings that are not impressively realistic - bland is not in these days in the Zeisel household. This series has also been a disappointment to me. Too bad PentaTone do not seem to feel that the early symphonies are worth recording!
