This is a straightforward no-nonsense reading of this attractive but controversial Bruckner symphony and all the better for it. Jaarvi follows the unadulterated original version written before critics and friends weighed in with advice about 'revisions to improve the flow and structure' and before self-doubt got hold of him. Jaarvi eschews any form of elaboration or deeper interpretation quite deliberately in the spirit in which he argues the then relatively naive composer would have imagined. Some might argue that this reading lacks gravitas but I am prepared to be swayed by the maestro's reasoning and found his reading to be most enjoyable.

My only disappointment is that Sony RCA did not record the work in DSD as often they do for this conductor but this may be because of restrictions in recording equipment at the venue. I tend to harp on a bit about DSD these days but the SQ of the Marantz SA 10 is far more sensitive to the recording format than any other player in my experience. DSD recordings sound alive and real in a way that no other format with the exception of DXD can match.
