The recording, made in 1963 by Supraphon, is beautifully remastered for SACD by Tower Records Japan. Clean and warm with a wonderful orchestral balance. The brass may be a bit too forward, but I suspect that was by design of the original engineers. Those Eastern Europeans do love their brass.

The performance is a huge disappointment, unfortunately. Dull and tired. I was hoping for something revelatory considering who was performing and conducting. But alas, pedestrian leadership from Karel Ancerl. There are several far superior performances, including from the Czechs.

I have never bought a Tower Records SACD. Is it fair to assume that they use original analogue tapes? Do they re-master in DSD or PCM?

Unlike the vague info on provenance for the Universal SHM-SACD releases, Tower's classical SACDs often have precise documentation and notes on the page for each disc. If you want to check out the Tower SACD releases here are some useful links:
