Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake

State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia “Evgeny Svetlanov"
Vladimir Jurowski (conductor)

Swan Lake is the first of the three great ballets that Tchaikovsky wrote, and arguably the most famous. The piece is mainly known in the shape it obtained in 1895, when it became a classic in the choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. That “imperial” version strayed from Tchaikovsky’s world premiere score, with several cuts, abridgements and displacements. This high definition recording presents the work as it was heard during the 1877 world premiere performance, highlighting the extraordinary symphonic qualities of Tchaikovsky's original conception.

Swan Lake is performed by the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia “Evgeny Svetlanov” led by its Artistic Director Vladimir Jurowski. Jurowski has recorded extensively for PENTATONE and has received enthusiastic critical acclaim. In July 2017, he signed a long-term, multi-album agreement with PENTATONE including a new complete cycle of the symphonies of Sergei Prokofiev with the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia “Evgeny Svetlanov”. Other releases by Jurowski for PENTATONE include violin concertos by Britten and Hindemith with Arabella Steinbacher, and tone poems by Mahler and Strauss, performed with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin where he is Chief Conductor and Artistic Director.

A sumptuous, sparkling and dynamic account of the world's favourite ballet orchestral score. Sure footed, inspired playing by the State Academic SO under Vladimir Jurowskis sets a new standard on disc for this work and will be a certain crowd pleaser. Captured brilliantly in an astonishingly vivid and detailed DSD recording from Erdo Groot for me this is by far the most seductive account of the score on disc, casting a long shadow over the recent Jarvi SACD recording and Anrdre Previn's old EMI warhorse favourite. Utterly intoxicating and compelling, no lover of the ballet will want to miss this performance. A White Swan indeed.

Pentatone is urged to record Tchaikovsky's other two major ballet scores with these artists - I just cannot wait.

so unlikely Pentatone will record it again for SACD. Shame.

Do you know when that was recorded Graham, maybe there is a high-res file that Pentatone could use? I agree 'though it seems unlikely we'll get a DSD recorded version from them.

I believe that it was recorded live on 30 December 2013 in Moscow, (Tchaikovsky Concert Hall).

Which pre-dates the new long term multi-recording contract between Jurowski & Pentatone signed in 2017 as mentioned in the preamble.

According to the booklet, this excellent album was recorded February 2017 and February 2018. Pentatone DSD files are available online, although not at the Pentatone website. This recording was made in DXD and, although not available in that format, it is available in DSD 2.8, the same resolution as the SACD.

"Pentatone DSD files are available online, although not at the Pentatone website." This is not true, the sacd image files are available on the Pentatone website. Still a very good download container for DSD playback.....

Thanks for the clarification, Groot.

For multi-channel recordings the stereo and multi-channel tracks are not made available separately on the Pentatone website. In addition, where DXD masters are made, neither master copies nor double or quadruple DSD copies are made available for sale. All of this would be nice. However, the engineering of this particular recording is really excellent and sounds great in DSD 64.

I got this recording in the mail today (together with Jurowski's recent Nutcracker). The box includes an instruction on how to fold a napkin to a swan. I like that.
I haven't had time to hear the Swan Lake yet. Too busy buying napkins.

Their generosity did not last long Jan, no paper squirrels included in the latest release.
