Schubert is obviously the flavour of the month. It will be good to have a full survey in DSD but which to choose as we have three DSD sets now in progress?

Bear in mind of course that the "Great C Major" and "The Unfinished" are the only two that are worth the candle according to critics so have stayed the course over the years. The 6th apparently conveys wry humour to the Danes but I and no doubt most Brits have no idea why?

The Beecham recordings of 3, 5 and 6 were best sellers for EMI (made in the late 50's) and were issued on the EMI 'Great Recordings of the Century' series among others. I have the Dausgaard recordings which by comparison to Beecham seem to have something of a Nordic chill, in my opinion, which makes me want to sample this new set.

I've always thought that late Schubert leads inexorably to Bruckner which might portend an interesting Schubert series from this source given Ballot's previous recordings of Bruckner which make Celibidache and Tinter sound rushed. I've already admitted once today to being deaf to Bruckner so we shall see. I have the Nott and Dausgaard Schubert sets and find them both, different as they are, quite engaging. Any purchase of these will certainly be surplus to requirements but I won't be able to resist the Great C Major when it comes.

Sir John Barbirolli's 1966 account of the Great C Major with The Hallé remains very special to me, it was one of the first LP's I could afford to buy and one that still gets aired frequently in our household today despite being 'slightly the worse' for wear after 52 years of service and in Mono (ALP 2251) only. There was a stereo version (ASD 2251) which has been on my wish list for quite a while now....

It remains in my opinion at least one of the best versions of the Symphony on disc. Barbirolli was a colourful and charismatic leader and his recordings invariably reflected his personality. We hear little of The Hallé internationally these days sadly.

Well, I have sampled Rene Jacobs offering on Pentatone and commented there.

May be of interest to those like me who know little of this young man. He seems to be making waves in Vienna; this newly formed ensemble comprises musicians from the various senior Viennese orchestras, no mean credentials.

Outstanding performances in every way and an easy recommendation to colleagues. Acoustic is rather "in your face" and lacks atmosphere so to speak which might put off some listeners but does not detract from the very fine playing with deft use of the 'volume control'.
