Dvorak: Violin Concerto, Suk: Fantasy - Hemsing, Buribayev

Dvorak: Violin Concerto, Suk: Fantasy - Hemsing, Buribayev

BIS  BIS-2246

Stereo/Multichannel Hybrid

Classical - Orchestral

Dvorak: Violin Concerto
Suk: Fantasy, Liebeslied

Eldbjorg Hemsing (violin)
Antwerp Symphony Orchestra
Alan Buribayev (conductor)

Originally we had planned for this SACD to be Eldbjorg Hemsing's recording debut, but the repertoire (Borgström, Shostakovich) interest in what ultimately did become her debut swayed us and we changed the planning accordingly. Rarely has a recording debut had the impact of that other record (BIS-2366 SACD) and Eldbjorg has been catapulted to international awareness in a very short time. Here we have more standard repertoire, no less well played and beautifully accompanied by the Antwerp SO (formerly the Royal Flemish Philharmonic) under Alan Buribayev. Self-recommending and the second record in a projected long series.

An absolutely sensational Dvorak that for once makes no apologies for the work, treated here like the masterpiece that it is rather than the cello concerto's lesser sibling. The Suk fantasy is inherently episodic but Hemsing makes it more coherent and therefore, to me, more enjoyable than usual. This lady's a real star!

I had largely forgotten this Dvorak concerto, but it is sensational, especially as played here so dynamically by Hemsing. Quite wonderful! And this is one of the best recordings from Bis.
