I enjoyed Jarvi and NHK Symphony's Strauss recordings a lot and had high hopes for this Mahler 6. Alas, the performance is disappointing. Weak climaxes, often hesitant, the tension barely holding together. Maybe they need more time to live with the score... This is a 2.5 out of 5 stars.

I have the disc but have only spun it once so far. In the sense that the performance wasn't riveting at first hearing I can see where your are coming from.

Järvi's relationship with the NHK has produced some stunning and captivating performances almost unrivalled on disc while the recordings themselves are amongst the most detailed, balanced and realistic available in any format. These artistes have a rare synergy that has so far set them apart.

I must admit when the Mahler disc was announced two thought entered my head; "oh no! Not another Mahler survey!" and "Is Järvi really a Mahlerian?" There is a long way to go before either question can be answered satisfactorily but if some consensus follows your initial opinion, we may have an answer to one of those questions rather more quickly.

Well, Paavo J already has a complete Mahler set of Blu-Ray videos with the Frankfurt RSO. Also, when the NHKSO toured Europe in 2017 their Mahler 6 got a lot of good reviews - for example their Southbank performance:

This recording was done shortly before the tour started, but maybe it doesn't capture the excitement of the tour concerts?
