Change of mind at RCO? Hopefully we will see an early release date for this recording which is sorely needed.

Once they actually investigated the accusations and found nothing to support them - managing director of the orchestra Jan Raes has been forced to resign (though he stands by his actions to fire Gatti.) (Even Haitink spoke out and criticized the orchestra for rushing with a punishment before looking into the accusations.) Now they are releasing this "Salome." (But Gatti's Mahler cycle is dead.)

Politics aye! He will not be reappointed as too much humble pie would have to be eaten.

Money is the root of all evil. Nobody will ever any of us out for inappropriate behaviour when we were young bucks on the block - so many years ago that even we wouldn't remember if it was true or not!

I was very disappointed by this. Listening to the stereo layer, sound is boomy and bass heavy with a rather unfocused soundstage. The singing did not blow me away either; I have many recordings of this opera and this is not one the best. The Solti from the early 60s on Blu-ray audio is vastly superior.

Interesting comment Gordon, I too am very fond of Salome and have just ordered this disc. I watch the RCO live quite often so tend to support them as one of my 'home' orchestras and Everett Porter is reliably one of the best recording high res engineers there are in the SACD world. How do you listen out of interest?

Performance by the Netherlands State Opera no less aided and abetted by the RCO. Such a star studded line-up should have guaranteed success. The presentation including full libretto is astonishingly superb in every detail. However, I note that the recording was made by the Opera House's own recording team and not Polyhymnia's Everett Porter who usually records the RCO concerts. Maybe just a clue but to be fair they have been responsible for the wonderful series of NSO opera recordings on Challenge Classic?

Hiredfox, I am using an Oppo UDP- 205 player, McIntosh C52 pre-amp, MC 452 and MC 462 bi-amping a pair of B&W 802 D3s.I did listen again to double check my initial reaction and I saw no reason to modify my comments, a lot of bass cut was necessary to make the sound tolerable. I will endeavour to listen to the multi-channel layer in my theatre set-up to see if that is better.

What a superb system you have Gordon. It will reveal the flaws in any recording or performance. My copy of Salome has arrived but I have not had the time to settle in for a couple of hours to listen to it. I'll get there in due course and add any extra comments that come to mind.
