I started with Symphony #8, which is the worst in terms of sound of the 3. My preference so far was:
1. EMI Japan SACD (TOGE-12048)
2. Toshiba Redbook CD (TOCE-14022) remastered by Yoshio Okazaki
3. EMI SACD (50999 9 55984 2 0)

I was shocked by this Tower remastered disk! The improvement is vast, across the board compared to the EMI Japan SACD.

Thank you for your comment, Hui Zhu. I find these comparisons very useful.

Tower Records usually do an impressive job with these old recordings! I plan to order this set as soon as the airmail situation gets back to normal.

I was surprised, though, by the fact that you rate the two EMI SACDs differently. Their release dates are not too far apart and they come from the same company. Did they use different remasterings for these two releases?

I got rid of the EMI SACD already, but looking at the picture in the Japan EMI SACD it appears it's the same team. So they should have the same remastering. But the sound difference is there, and not by a small margin. I don't know how to explain this. But the difference shows up in other comparison as well, e.g. Karajan Beethoven triple concerto, Klemperer Mozart.

I always feel EMI uses too much filtering in their remastering, and that's why I bought this set to try. What a surprise! Now I'll be getting the Klemperer sets and also the new Martinon set from Tower.

Happy listening!
