There certainly is no shortage of Mozart violin concertos on record. They come and they go. Some are good, some are better. This recording belongs to the latter league. The Korean-American, So Jin Kim, at the moment Associate Concertmaster with the Munich Radio Orchestra, is indeed an excellent violinist with a broad command over her instrument and remarkable musical insight.

It is said, and I believe so, too, that Mozart’s music does not only give proof of his ingenuity, but that it also has spiritually soothing and healing powers. Listening to Mozart is uplifting; makes one feel better. There is one condition though, that it be played impeccably. Mozart doesn’t leave room for cheating, nor covering up mistakes with clever tinkering. A wrong note is a wrong note and it will stick out like the proverbial sore thumb. Ms. Kim lives up to the requirement with brilliance and sure fingered playing. Her intonation is perfect and the sound she ably draws from her instrument is warm and velvety.

Many will know the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester, proudly reviving and upholding the tradition of the ‘Mannheimer Schule’ from previous recordings like Vivaldi: Oboe, Bassoon Concertos - Fuchs, Rácz, Schlaefli, though this time playing without conductor. As in Mozart’s time, it is the soloist. Ms. Kim who leads and dialogues with the orchestra like hand in glove. Everything ‘spot on’ and captured in clear-cut surround evidence, thanks to the ARS recording team.

Lovely music, lovingly played, with Raymond Leppard’s cadenzas. Another pearl to add to your collection. Don’t just take my word for it, listen for yourself here: It appears that the link given is not working. A solution is, to go to the website of KKO (the orchestra) where it is available: News, Dezember | 2019 So Jin Kim spielt Mozart. I found it a real eye-opener.

There are excellent versions of these concertos in the SA-CD catalogue by Steinbacher, Manze & Fischer all recorded in DSD. Not sure there is an obvious place for this new version but good luck to Kim anyway. I will not be buying.
