As far as Esoteric's SACDs are concerned, I'm fundamentally cautious. But when it comes to new editions of old analog recordings, it is worth taking a closer look.

So also in this case. As far as I understand, this is a real new remastering based on the original tapes.

The old DG recordings from 1967 were published in the early days of SHM-SACD (at least the first 3 concerts). A few years ago the 2nd SHM-SACD came out with the remaining concerts.

The sonic difference between the two editions is significantly smaller than, for example, in the Beethoven symphonies with C. Kleiber. At this point I can give the all-clear: there is no imperative to buy these new discs.

Nevertheless, the sound image here appears a little wider, warmer and more spacious on the Esoteric edition. The strings sound a little softer without losing their richness of detail. The bass range seems to be a little more emphasized, which I like.
