For those (like me) who aren't able to buy directly from TowerRecords:

For some countries (I'm in the US) it is possible to buy from Tower Records web-site using World Shopping service. For me it appears on the screen as an option. There is an extra service charge for it, however.

I usually order my Tower Records discs through Buyee and it goes smoothly in most cases. You can also download their "Add to Buyee" extension. You can then place items in your Buyee cart directly from the Tower Records website.

I have used CD Japan to order SACDs from the major labels (i.e. Universal, Sony or Warner) and I found the service very good. But I haven't tried their proxy service yet. I know they have recently streamlined it.

(I'm in Canada.)

Compared to the BD/download (remastered 2013), this new transfer by UK ClassicSound strips off the somewhat bass enhanced (blown-up) sound of the 2013 remaster. The current 2021 remaster actually sounds more direct (close to the original tapes?) with no further fiddling. It looks like they've put in an effort in restoration/refurbishment of the tapes prior to digitisation.

Contrapunctus: I too have compared the BDA with the new SACD, and find the latter superior. I would not have been able to put my finger on it as well as you have. Thank you.
BTW, as for the performance, all three of the principals are beyond fabulous. Sutherland outdoes Sutherland, Pavarotti outdoes Pavarotti, and Caballé is no wallflower Liù. When her old man falls down, she out-sings all the people of Peking in pleading for help. Her one word "mercy" counterbalances all the grotesque selfishness of the icy princess.

Buying from Japan isn't easy ! However I have just bought from Japan both this wonderful recording [ also have the remastered CD ] AND the new SACD version from Antonio Pappano with Kaufmann. It will be fascinating to compare the two recordings and I will report to members more on this when the discs arrive. If the SACD transfer of this recording has been done well newly recorded or not it will be hard to beat...........but we'll see . Anybody else been silly enough to empty their wallet in Japan on both these on SACD sets LOL ? ?
