Glad to see BIS is still doing massive boxed sets. I hope BIS boxes up Spanyi's 59-volume CPE Bach integrale of keyboard solos and concertos - many years have passed since BIS released solo Vol. 40 and over a decade since concertos Vol. 19.

Comment by Contrapunctus - March 26, 2024 (2 of 3)

Regarding Spanyi's CPE Bach concerto cycle, the final 20th volume was released in 2014. I own the complete cycle and enjoy listening to these lovely concertos. As far as I know, only the last few volumes were recorded in 24bit: vol. 16, 17 (24/44.1); vol. 18 - 20 (24/96). So, it's unlikely to see these recordings reissued in a SACD box like the above Bach/Suzuki consisting mostly of 24bit recordings.

This is a great set if you can get it at a good price and don't already own a lot of it. But it's not all high-resolution audio. It all sounds good, but the works originally recorded in 24-bit surround definitely sound better. The contents:

Disks 1-55: Sacred Cantatas
56-65: Secular Cantatas
66-78: Passions, Oratorios, Masss and other works

Recording formats (any disk in more than one format I've simply divided in half, which isn't quite true):

16-bit/44.1 kHz, added surround:
Disks 1-15, 18-19, 21, 23a, 56, 66-67 (John Passion), 70-71 (Christmas Oratorio), 75b (Magnificat)
24 total

20-bit/44.1 kHz, added surround:
16-17, 20, 22, 23b, 25-26
6.5 total

24-bit/44.1 kHz, added surround:
24, 27
2 total

24-bit/44.1 kHz, original surround:
29-30, 32-54, 57-58, 51a, 72-73 (B minor Mass), 77
30.5 total

24-bit/88.2 kHz, original surround:
28, 31, 76a (Easter, Ascension Oratorios)
2.5 total

24-bit/96 kHz, original surround:
55, 59-60, 51b, 62-65, 68-69 (Matthew Passion), 74-75a, 76b, 78
