I don't know if we needed another "German Requiem," but I'm glad this one was made because the performance is superb! (And yes, I ask that question all the time as well and ...
I listened to this release this morning using the Presto Classical streaming service.

What puzzles me is 24/96. Why stop at 96? Why not go to DXD? Is there a reason not to? Does the set-up change if the resolution is bumped to it? They can't be worried about ...

This is the second time on SACD. First SACD release was back in 2010 by Analogue Productions Dexter Gordon: Go#
This new one was released November 2024 and may well be a different remaster, even though Kevin Gray also had a hand in remastering the 2010 release in a joint effort with Steve Hoffman.
This time around Kevin Gray has the sole mastering credit.
To quote the booklet:
Don Was states "In honor of our upcoming 85th Anniversary, our friends at Blue Note Japan will make Kevin Gray's exquisite vinyl mastering available for the first time in the SACD format"
Kevin Gray states, "While the vinyl releases deservedly get the lion's share of the attention, I am very pleased that my same mastering output will be available on SACD through Blue Note in Japan!"
The CD Japan site indicates it has a PCM step though - "using 6kHz/24bit digital source material he created for the analog reissues."
Sounds very good all the same. Authentically analogue/PCM/DSD you might say!
I'm not in a position to compare it to the earlier SACD, but you are unlikely to be disappointed with this 2024 version.
