Naxos 6.110013

Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor Op. 18, Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor Op. 30
Konstantin Scherbakov (piano)
Russian State Symphony Orchestra
Dmitry Yablonsky (conductor)
One of the most popular romantic concertos of all time, Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, immortalised in the film Brief Encounter, is memorable for its bravura writing, profusion of long, surging melodies and luxuriant orchestration. The Piano Concerto No. 3, featured in the film Shine, is technically even more demanding and takes the romantic virtuoso concerto to its absolute peak.

Wonderful bargain, absolutely. Scherbakov offers an idiomatic account of the both concertos. He gets full support from the Russian State Symphony Orchestra and Dmitry Yablonsky.
The spacious and clear 5.0 surround sound - which has been mastered in DSD - is surely one of the best experiences from the catalogue of Naxos. The sound of the piano can be heard from centre and rears are used mostly for the ambience.
Don't hesitate, this SACD is definitely worth every penny. Delightful disc, indeed.
