This is a very beautiful performance, with Ma mère l'Oye ballet being the standout. It was also very well recorded by Tonmeister Helmut Burk. According to EBS's Rainer Maillard, the March 1993 recording was done on DG's Sony 3324 multi-track machine, which had been modified from 24 tracks/16-bit to 16-tracks/24 bit (at 44.1K). It was mixed for multi-channel for this 2004 SACD release. They would have had to remix the stereo as well, because in 1993 DG could archive their multitracks in high res but noise-shaped the mixdowns to 16 for CD release. The SACD sounds much better than the 4D CD, with pinpoint focus, finer detail and more dynamics. (Tke 4D blurb in DG's CD booklet refers to the converters as 21-bit but in this case and others that is not correct; DG was also using a Nagra D 24-bit 4-track on some 4D releases, such as Boulez's Mahler 6.)
