I also want to add to the accolades already given to this SACD. Of Beethoven's piano trios, these two along with the so-called "Ghost" trio are my personal favorites. The performances by the Kempf trio are exemplary and second to none - that's high praise considering the greats that have recorded this repertoire over the years. They certainly come up superior to the Vienna Trio (Nimbus), the Beaux Arts (recently released complete set on Philips) and several other star-based trio formations that I have in my collection or have heard. You will get the full effect of these pieces through the Kempf Trio's performance. I also hope Bis has plans to add more of the same.
Sonically I only have one quibble - the piano sounds like it was recorded with its lid down. Other than that, this is a spectacular recording with judicious balances between the instruments and a proper amount of recording space ambience (I listen in 2 channel wit Hafler-type ambient surround). One of my gripes about some chamber recordings is that they are too reverberant and tend to obscure some of the details and immediacy of the ensemble. Not so in this case. Great work as usual, Bis!
