Review by John Broggio - September 8, 2012
A superb follow-up to Mozart: Youth Symphonies Vol. 1 - Marriner.
Whilst all the compositions are lightweight and facile compared to his mature masterpieces, the flute solo of the opening Symphony No. 20 is gorgeous - both as a melody and by the ASMF flautist (sadly not identified). This is not the only highlight, the Symphony No. 51 is in fact the overture to La Finta Giardiniera with a finale attached (this is the only 3 movement symphony on the disc, the remainder having been composed in the now traditional 4-movement style).
Like other releases in this collection show, Sir Neville Marriner and the ASMF were ahead of their times (or behind them if one wishes to ignore the "aberrations" of mid-late C20 mainstream performance practice!) in their Mozartian credentials. As before, the playing is both light and full of vigour. There is frequent use of mutes in the slow movements and the difference is a wonderful effect that Mozart was to use far more sparingly in future.
Like the companion volumes, the recording has aged remarkably well and stands up to close scrutiny very well indeed.
Recommended.
