Comment by Downunderman - March 18, 2021 (1 of 1)

A 'mileage may vary' disc if ever there was one.

When it first came out in 2005 I stayed away because commentary on the sonic qualities of the disc were mostly unsupportive and identified a range of shortcomings. More recently I got to wondering if advances in SACD players themselves might be able to improve the listening experience.

This was mastered by Shawn R. Britton.

In the here and now the disk sounds very good except for one significant flaw. The high frequencies seem to have been boosted. They are brightish sounding with a somewhat shrill, distorted character. Sound staging, separation, low end all seemed very good (for something recorded in 1972) and generally well balanced. Not too lean, not too fat, just about right really.

I guess the problem with the upper frequencies may be down to the mixing choices back in 1972, however I also noticed that the earliest copyright date given is 1999. This suggests something took place at that time. All the more interesting because there have not been any reissues of the title that come from that year. The first reissue since 1999 being this MoFi one.

If you have the title and have upgraded your player since you last played this disk it could be worth giving it spin. You just never know how it might turn out!
