Review by John Broggio - February 11, 2007

A beautiful sound comes across from this Etcetera disc but sadly the playing doesn't match this or the concept of the album which is well thought out.

For the most part Joris van den Hauwe and Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden play in a satisfactory manner but their approach does not set the pulse racing in the more dramatic movements nor provide balm for the soul in the contemplative episodes. Partly, the problem is due to an inconsistent approach to tuning from van den Hauwe - the same note can be rendered sweetly at the beginning of a phrase which is then soured only a few moments later. Maybe this is meant to be a musical effect - for me it was just off-putting.

Then there are the pieces where they come into direct competition against Dora Schwarzberg and either Martha Argerich or Polina Leschenko; with the best will in the world there is no flattering comparison that can reasonably be made. Sadly the extra repertoire that will be new to many listeners from Clara Schumann cannot outweigh these shortcomings - investigate if you wish but for a more intense and interesting Schumann experience that captures the quicksilver changes of mood, I'd recommend Schumann: Violin Sonatas - Schwarzberg, Leschenko.
