Winter and Christmas is approaching and therefore it felt right to return to this album and listen to it again. Handel's Messiah is, without a doubt, a true masterpiece of Western sacred music and deserves to be recorded for SA-CD.

Davis implements the work throughoutly with great care and is faithful to the beautiful character of the music. However, his steady tempo choices were a big disappointment as the music didn't flow forward effortlessly. And despite the DSD recording by Classic Sound is excellent with plenty of detail, the box-like acoustics of the Barbican does not offer ideal prerequisites for the work in this scale.

There are not many alternatives available, unfortunately. Not yet released is Handel: Messiah - Savall, recorded in December 2017 at Palau de la Música Catalana, Bach: Markuspassion - Savall sets high expectations for the album. However, for those who are longing for easy recommendation Handel: Messiah - Jacobs is definitely the best offering on SA-CD but regrettably Harmonia Mundi has ceased the SA-CD production, only CD remains. Handel: Messiah - McCreesh is very good as well, recorded in December 1996 at All Saints Church, Tooting, London, although the recording was done only at 24-bit/48 kHz hi-res PCM, not at DSD.

I’d like to add this version: Handel: Messiah - Lautten Compagney I reviewed it 6 years ago as a matter of interest, saying that I didn’t believe it would ever become a prime choice. However, it does have historical merit, widening the scope of all lovers of the Messiah.
