Bruckner: Symphony No. 8
Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra
Simone Young (conductor)
Simone Young and the Philharmoniker Hamburg trace the original form of Bruckner’s symphonies. The original versions of Symphonies 2, 3 and 4 have already been published, and now the cycle continues with the large-format Eighth in the version from 1887. Naturally, it is available in the music-lovers’ favourite SACD format which gives the listener the feeling of actually being in the audience in the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg.

Many years ago, probably in the 1990s, I remember seeing/hearing Simone Young conducting at the Metropolitan Opera, and she was so... ordinary and instantly forgettable. I stopped paying attention and then she stepped in last minute at the NY Philharmonic to conduct Mahler's 6th a few years back, and it was breathtaking. I started looking into her more recent things and this whole Bruckner cycle is really exceptional.
