Mahler: Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection"

Ricarda Merbeth (soprano)
Bernarda Fink (mezzo soprano)
Netherlands Radio Choir
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Mariss Jansons (conductor)

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is steadfastly progressing with its Mahler cycle under the direction of its chief conductor Mariss Jansons. Following its releases of the First, Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, the orchestra now turns its attention to the Second and Third Symphonies (scheduled release date: spring 2011).

Jansons and his Amsterdam-based orchestra performed the Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 in the 2009–10 season as part of the full, chronological series of performances given by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies to commemorate his 150th birthday and the 100th anniversary of his death. The series is being performed under the direction of various conductors during the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons.

Once again, Jansons stands out in these performances with his astonishingly keen eye for the minutest details. Like no other, Jansons possesses the ability to integrate all this beautiful detailing into the virtually infinite overarching climaxes that can make listening to Mahler’s symphonies such an exciting experience.

This is beautifully recorded and performed album. I'm going to collect the every disc of Jansons's ongoing Mahler cycle with the RCO. When the next release (probably the Symphony No. 7) will be available? We are waiting for the 7th, the 9th and perhaps even the 10th (Deryck Cooke version, hopefully). Jansons has had health problems, by the way. Still I am pretty hopeful that he is able to complete his excellent Mahler cycle. What do you think?

I agree with Waveform's comments. Symphony No 7 is to be released in the UK on 19th January 2018.

Jansons left the RCO some time ago, their Chief Conductor is now Danielle Gatti with whom their two most recent recordings were made. This newly released recording is from 2016. It's possible Jansons could go back as guest conductor to record the 9th, Haitink has been a regular guest conductor and some of his later guest concerts were recorded. I am extremely doubtful of the "10th" ever being considered important enough for such an arrangement.

The RCO blu-ray video set of the Mahler symphonies contains a complete Cooke 10th conducted by Eliahu Inbal so maybe there's hope it'll one day make to sacd. The set appears to have disappeared from retail distribution but is available directly from the orchestra for 97 euro. With all the other Mahler on my shelves it's too rich for my blood just to get a complete 10th. I'll soldier on with my Rattle BPO version on dvd-a.
