The SACD version is nowhere to be found. I ordered this version twice already (from o.a. Amazon). Although the picture showen on the websites was a SACD version, the disk sent was always the RDCD. No luck so far. My usual source for SACD is CDJapan, but they do not carry this item. None on Ebay. Who sells the SACD version?

Comment by DYB - November 9, 2021 (2 of 21)

JPC (link is above) lists it as a stereo/multichannel hybrid SACD. I've ordered from that site in the past, so it's a legit store. Worth trying (maybe contact them first to confirm).

Also Amazon.com (US store) shows an SACD cover and lists it as such, and it says they have 2 copies in stock.

Comment by hiredfox - November 10, 2021 (3 of 21)

Yep! This is a SACD. In my collection for many years. Cracking performance. Try e-Bay if you want another source, I have seen it listed a few times. There is one on there now.

JPC confirmed to me by mail that the disk they have in stock is actually not a SACD despite having listed multichannel playback as well as 2 channel. That information is not correct.

Comment by DYB - November 28, 2021 (5 of 21)

That is unfortunate. I guess eBay may be the safest (and only?) way to go at this point.

Comment by Athenaeus - November 30, 2021 (6 of 21)

It sounds like they repressed the disc and forgot about the SACD layer. Something similar happened with Bychkov's disc of Rachmaninov (catalogue number PH07028). Hänssler Profil accidentally omitted the SACD layer when they reprinted it. You can read about the problem in the comments posted under that release.

Comment by hiredfox - December 1, 2021 (7 of 21)

Don't forget that a lot of recordings were dual inventory printed as CD & SACD. The SACD may be sold out. A simpler explanation.

Comment by Athenaeus - December 1, 2021 (8 of 21)

Good point, Hiredfox! I dug around and, indeed, it seems BR Klassik originally produced two versions, an RBCD and a hybrid SACD. Perhaps they got their inventory mixed up. But it still is possible that the hybrid SACD version was reprinted at a later date but with the SACD layer accidentally omitted. Paul SA Renaud, did the discs you received have "SACD" printed on the back of the case?

Comment by PaulSARenaud - December 4, 2021 (9 of 21)

No the case was clearly marked CD and no reference to a SACD. One of the sellers (to me) claimed (after the sale) that Amazon is to blame as they choose and upload the cover art. I am not sure that that is true. But anyhow. But there are a couple of SACD-versions for sale on Amazon US but I would not be surprised if these were CD's and no SACD's.

Comment by Athenaeus - December 4, 2021 (10 of 21)

Ah okay, then that's the two editions getting mixed up, not, as I initially thought, a repressing that was not done correctly.

BR Klassik have their own web-shop (www.br-shop.de/br-klassik). They still have this recording in stock and are listing it as an SACD. You could try your luck with them directly. You could also inquire by email before ordering. These smaller record labels usually answer customer inquiries.

Comment by hiredfox - December 6, 2021 (11 of 21)

A a general point, I have bought hundreds of SACD discs from Amazon sellers over the years through the links on this site and its predecessor and have never received anything other than the SACD ordered. Never been a mix-up of formats or misunderstandings..

Comment by PaulSARenaud - December 9, 2021 (12 of 21)

@Athenaeus. Thanks for the tip. I ordered it from BR directly as SACD (as cleared listed on their site). I assume there won't be a mix-up anymore.

Comment by Athenaeus - December 9, 2021 (13 of 21)

You're welcome! When you receive your disc, let us know how it went.

And if you get an RBCD from them too, we'll have found the source of the error, i.e. the record label itself. But let's hope that doesn't happen.

Comment by PaulSARenaud - December 23, 2021 (14 of 21)

Again, also the "SACD" as sent by BR directly turned out to be a RDCD. Despite the fact that on their website I was listed as a SACD. A customer service agent has not clue what I was talking about, but said: Just send it back and you get your money back. The problem being that I do not want my money back, I want the SACD-version.

Comment by Athenaeus - December 23, 2021 (15 of 21)

That's a shame!

Your comment about the customer support's cluelessness made me take a closer look at BR-Klassik's online shop. Actually, it's not really their site! It's a distributor's website that hosts a virtual storefront for them. The shop is in fact run by a company called Bognermusik. That explains why they don't know (and probably don't care either).

As a last option, you could try sending a message via this page: https://www.br-klassik.de/footernavi/kontakt/kontaktformular-102.html. Your message should go to BR-Klassik, not some middleman. BR-Klassik might be able to resolve this. If not, they should at least be made aware of the problem.

Comment by DYB - December 24, 2021 (16 of 21)

Wow I can't believe this is all still happening!! Now I want to get the SACD of this as well, just for fun because it seems impossible to get!

I may try eBay. I assume an eBay seller will actually know what they are selling. (I should not assume, of course...)

Comment by Contrapunctus - December 25, 2021 (17 of 21)

The recording is also available as 24/48 download (e.g. qobuz). The low resolution (48kHz) makes me wonder if the original recording actually is genuine DSD.

Comment by Athenaeus - December 26, 2021 (18 of 21)

An interesting comment, Contrapunctus. There is no technical information on this page. I checked on the Native DSD site and the recording is not listed there, which is a bad sign. I don't have this disc so I can't check the booklet. A proud owner of the SACD can perhaps have a look in his or her booklet and tell us if it contains any technical information.

But even if it's a lower-resolution recording, the SACD is supposed to have a multichannel layer, which might make it desirable for those who have a multichannel sound system.

Comment by John Bacon-Shone - December 29, 2021 (19 of 21)

My booklet states Mastering: Stereo & surround mastering: Christoph Stickel, msm-studios Munchen
No mention of DSD or PCM or resolution

Comment by hiredfox - December 30, 2021 (20 of 21)

John.

If you place the disc in your SACD player, the player will automatically select the SACD layer and the SACD symbol will illuminate. If not then it is not a SACD.

SACD are DVD's, RBCD's are not. Simple I know but not to be overlooked.
