Trumpet Triumph
Reinhold Friedrich is one of the leading trumpet soloists of our times. He has now teamed up with the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra for performances of Russian trumpet concertos. Arutiunian’s box-office hit is of course included for comparison, but on this brand-new SACD previously uncharted territory is also waiting for discovery. The Romantic Concerto by Ilya Shakhov proves to be a choice gem and here celebrates a recording premiere full of feeling and electrifying suspense.

Tumultuous Times
Shakhov is little known, and outside Russia his name has been subject to various spellings. He nevertheless composed – as an autodidact! – the brilliantly colourful music for what is certainly the most famous Russian puppet show. An Arutiunian contemporary, he initially ran into trouble during the tumultuous Stalin era and was sent off to cut peat – which was not at all detrimental to his music brimming with life.

Top Talent
Sergei Vasilenko opens his trumpet concerto with a grand gesture full of pathos; it is marked by elegiac lines extending far and ide and – in the third movement – is bursting with mirth. Here Reinhold Friedrich is in his element and underscores his top-class as a wind instrumentalist with an uncommonly versatile sound quality.

Tarantella Trump
Oskar Böhme, the father of Russian trumpet music tracing his family origins to Saxony, offers an animated contrast to the large format concertos with his jaunty tarantella “La Napolitaine.” Here and in Goedicke’s concert étude Reinhold Friedrich is able to present his dazzling virtuosity to the supple and opulent accompaniment of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra under Christoph-Mathias Mueller. Since the whole has been registered as a radiant 2+2+2 recording, the audiophile listener is also immediately swept away.
