Review by Rick Kosmick - August 26, 2014

Over 3 hours and 17 minutes of music. The concert is broken into three sets. In my review of this disc, I decided to listen to each set separately over 3 days.

I will begin by stating one word: Extraordinary (both performances and audio quality).

You start with a fabled supergroup of 4 artists playing a massive concert tour for 31 dates in 1974. These performers have a history of conflicting egos and interpersonal tensions. The concerts were recorded but there never has been an official release until now some forty years later.

Simply put the recorded performances for this release are "astonishing". My humble answer is talent and individual respect by each of these artists for each other and the music they have created as individuals. In other words, no hogging the spotlight at the expense of a fellow artist. You have top notch performances from David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young. The results are magical at times.

For me, the performance highlights included the songs Carry Me; Almost Cut My Hair; Only Love Can Break Your Heart; Word Game; Suite Judy Blue Eyes (including some ragged edges); Military Madness; and an electrifying version of Ohio to end the concert. There are a few minor flaws on the songs Love the One You're With and Black Queen where the vocals of Stephen Stills are strained and muffled (only a minor quibble after all it is a live recording).

According to the liner notes, 9 shows were recorded with 16-track tapes that were utilized for this official release. The Blu-ray disc audio content is LPCM Stereo 192k 24Bit. It is here that this high resolution makes CSNY 1974 a very special recording. I was just startled by the exceptional quality of the audio for a live recording of this age (40 years ago).

The soundstage is very wide and simply outstanding in detail. The vocals and instruments have excellent separation. In particular, I note wonderful clarity in the sound of the guitars. For this live recording, there is a nice "fat" bass providing ample support for the music and vocals. The ambience is also excellent allowing the listener to feel as being part of the audience.

Overall these live recordings have a nice warm tone. It is also worth mentioning the crowd noise is generally and subtly heard at the beginning and end of songs and remains unobtrusive to the listening audience.

This release requires reference of key people for bringing this great music to us. Firstly, Graham Nash and co-producer Joel Bernstein for selecting the music of this concert after listening to hundreds of hours of tape. Project Engineer Stanley Johnston for the fabulous analogue to digital transfers. Special kudos to Bernie Grundman for the mastering. And Neil Young for his dedication to high quality audio (I read in an article and interview with Graham Nash that Neil Young would not approve this release without quality sound).

It is a pleasure to state I now have a reference disc of a live recording.

Highly recommended.
